60 Miles for Breast Cancer!

NEW INFORMATION (Photos and other stories) IS BEING ADDED THIS WEEK ABOUT THE WALK...THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND KEEP WATCHING!

Please allow me to share with you a personal commitment I have made to participate in a very special and powerful event in the fight against breast cancer.

The weekend of August 2, 2002, I will walk (again) in the Avon Breast Cancer 3Day -- a 60 mile walk in three days from Denver to Boulder (it changed from Ft. Collins to Boulder - they promise it will be shadier this year!)

I participated in the walk last year with my friend Julia and I have to say it was a rewarding and incredible experience! I could not have done it without the love and support of my very generous sponsors (friends, family, co-workers AND people who don't even know me) who made it possible for me to raise just over $3,000!

I must raise $1900 by mid-July, 2002 in order to participate in this walk. I have a personal goal I would like to meet of $3,500. My younger sister, Katie, is also participating this year with me. She is all geared up for her first walk. (She was too young by 2 months to participate last summer- you have to be 17).

This is where I need your help. Won't you please join me in this fight by making a fully tax deductible donation on my behalf?

Please click on the "donate" link to find out how you can help. Please keep in mind how far I will be walking -- and how many miles I will walk to train for this event between now and August.

SOME IMPORTANT STATISTICS:
....1,000,000 women in America are living with undetected breast cancer.
....182,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and over 40,000 will die.
....A new case of breast cancer will be diagnosed every 3 minutes.
....Every 13 minutes, the disease will claim another life.
....Over 80% of breast cancer cases occur in women with no predisposition for the disease -- it will come out of the blue detected by a mammogram or self exam at home.
....Men can develop breast cancer too. In 2002, 1500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die.
....Over two million breast cancer survivors are alive in America today.

SOME OF MY REASONS FOR WALKING:
.....My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer five weeks before my wedding, 1-½ years ago, at the age of 48. She went through a lot to combat its effects, but luckily, she is doing well.
…My grandmother, 2 of my husband’s aunts, and my paternal great-aunt all survived this horrible disease.
....My hope is that enough will be learned in the near future with the money that is raised by events such as the Avon 3-Day walks to eradicate breast cancer!
....I know some other women personally who have had breast cancer too. I do not want to see any other of my friends, family or acquaintances get this disease.
....I don't want you to get it!

WHERE THE MONEY GOES:
The net proceeds from the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day fund many different areas of breast cancer, including: medical research and clinical care; a national financial assistance program for medically underserved women who need breast biopsies and support services and more (see www.avoncrusade.com for more details).
